Laura Winkiel is an Associate Professor in the English Department at the University of Colorado, Boulder. She is an affiliate faculty member in the department of Gender and Women’s Studies as well as the department of Ethnic Studies. She is author of Modernism: The Basics (Routledge, 2017), a postcolonial approach to modernism, a second expanded edition forthcoming; Modernism, Race and Manifestos (Cambridge UP, 2008), Russian translation forthcoming; and co-editor of Geomodernisms: Race, Modernism, Modernity (Indiana UP, 2005). She has published articles in Modern Fiction Studies, Modernism/Modernity, Safundi, Feminist Modernist Studies, and many edited collections. She served as Senior Editor of English Language Notes for seven years during which she edited three special issues, including “Hydro-Criticism,” published in April 2019. Her next book, Modernism and the Middle Passage, is currently under review for publication. It interprets Anglophone modernist literature from the perspective of the history of slavery and colonization. She held the position of President of the Modernist Studies Association in 2017-18.
